![]() I think for example that it was great to have an optional area wrapping up the story of the Nameless King, precisely because it was optional I don't mind that sort of wrapping up. DSI had a lot of loose ends, sure, but it was a self-contained, coherent narrative that evolved continuously throughout the game, finally closing as you kill what is left of Gwyn. I can see the reasoning behind having SoC "closing the circle", but the series simply wasn't written that way originally. What I'm looking for isn't strictly information, but rather a single coherent narrative for the game, with some degree of closure with regard to the story of the kingdom of Lothric and all that it symbolizes. Not someone who came out in Ds3, even if i agree with you when i say that he's a top notch villain. That's why i like From's choice with the final boss of the series: you're fighting the gods, the Lords of Cinder, the players. When we fought Gwyn, we didn't know if he was good or evil, if he linked the flame to save the world or only because he didn't want the gods to lose their power. And we all know Dark Souls is not the game that imposes you the truth. But which extra information about the world would you get by fighting Sulyvahn instead? Apart from confirming that he is the bad guy, i mean. This doesn't add information about the world, i agree with you. Fighting the first flame is like fighting what gave birth to Dark Souls, the flame which is tired of being abused by everyone and now it has started to fight by itself. But also DS3 is all about lords of cinder, because we are fighting them all the time. Also, this series never wanted to create a clear distinction between good and evil, and the whole narrative world is about the lords of cinder. What we're saying is that this has been announced like the epilogue of the whole Dark Souls universe, not only DS3. I get your point, Sulyvahn is a true "villain" with motivations, and possibly the mastermind who hides behind the main events of DS3, hence a much more interesting character than SoC. I want to explain my point of view in a better way. So the lightning part doesn't make that much sense. ![]() We don't even make Sunligt Spear from his soul - we trade it with the Warriors of Sunlight covenant. ![]() Speaking of the moveset, that reminds me, it is explicitly said in DSI that Gwyn bestowed the power of lightning to his firstborn (Nameless King) before leaving Anor Londo. How would that affect the themes of the game? What would you understand differently about the game world, apart from the literal question "what happens to the people who link the flame"? Compare that to removing, say, Lothric, whose expressed desire to see the fire fade into nothing is key both to understanding many events surrounding him, and an essential part of the "entropy" theme of the game. It doesn't tell you much anything besides "A lot of people have linked the flame, and it has some kind of memory of them." If you ignore the gameplay aspect - imagine Soul of Cinder wasn't there and we just went and linked the flame. What I mean is that Soul of Cinder's narrative purpose is entirely meta - the whole "fighting yourself" thing that people wanted, for example.
